In the Community

When we connect one non-Sikh with a Sikh, in a positive way, we reduce fear and build a welcoming home for all.

Since the September 11, 2001 attacks, Sikhs have faced increasing hate crimes, due to the broader American culture's unfamiliarity with Sikh/Punjabi culture.

From the Sikh Coalition, “Washington State is the 3rd most dangerous place for Sikhs in the USA.” In September 2021, a burglar entered, completely ripped apart, and desecrated the Federal Way, WA Gurmat Learning Center, and Gurdwara. Then, at the end of September 2021, a Sikh elder working at a gas station in Lynwood, WA, was shot and killed. In Dec. 2019, a Sikh Uber driver in Bellingham, WA, was attacked by a client who tried to strangle and kill the Sikh driver while yelling horrible racist slurs. Thankfully, the driver managed to escape and call the police.

Twice a month. volunteers and members of the CKP work with Guru Nanak Gursikh Gurdwara – Lynden, WA, Gurdwara Guru Nanak Parkash – Ferndale, WA Singh Sabha Gurdwara – Bellingham, WA, to provide hot meals for Whatcom County’s tiny villages.

The Children’s Art Festival and Gurdwara Open House invites all Whatcom County community members in to experience  the Sikh Temple with lots of fun activities and Langar. This annual event is always free.

The mission of ONE Whatcom is to bring people together within the rich diversity of Native American, minority, and immigrant cultures in Whatcom County so that we can get to know each other and support each other.

Held four times a year and through private invitation, ONE Whatcom welcomes the public to partake in dinner, and engage in meaningful dialogue around race and discrimination, focusing primarily on Whatcom County hate crimes. The vision is for participants to leave these sessions with a clear understanding of what each group is experiencing, creating more community support.

If your group would like to participate, please reach out to Kamala Kaur. Contact is at the bottom of this page.
